Can Children Use a Sauna?

Saunas are used to improve physical health and mental wellbeing. Allowing kids to use a sauna may seem like an attractive idea as they have well-documented benefits. However, while children of all ages can visit a sauna, it’s not recommended that kids under six years of age spend time in these heated rooms because they can’t regulate their temperature as well as adults.

The guidelines below can ensure a safe sauna visit for junior family members.

Guidelines for children’s use of a sauna

Children of all ages can use a sauna, but following these guidelines will ensure their safety.

Age consideration

Young children can’t regulate their body temperature as well as grown-ups. Therefore, prepubescent children should be supervised in the sauna as a precaution. They should only be allowed to stay in the heated room for a maximum of 15 minutes. However, children under the age of three should not be in the sauna for more than 3 to 5 minutes.

Limit exposure

To minimize the effects of sauna on kids, sit them on lower benches and keep the steam to a minimum. Provide a bucket of cool water so that the children can splash themselves to cool off during the session.

Sauna etiquette

Children love to run around. However, doing so in a sauna can result in injury due to hazards like slippery benches and hot rocks. Teaching children how to use the heated space responsibly will help keep them safe. Explain to them that a sauna is a place of relaxation. It is also essential to prevent them from bringing toys into the sauna.

Rehydrate

After a steam session in the sauna, children should drink some water and eat a salty snack. These items will replenish the fluid and salt they have lost during the session.

Go infrared

Infrared saunas may be better for children as these facilities operate at a lower temperature. Unlike a traditional sauna, infrared saunas warm the body from the inside, making the heat easier for kids to handle. There is also a reduced risk of injury from burns as the heat source is concealed.

Consult with a doctor

While there are guidelines on how children can safely use saunas, every child is different. It is advisable to get the go-ahead from a pediatrician before allowing a child into this heated space.

Join in the fun

Saunas can be a great way to enjoy some quality family time. Children will learn how to use these facilities responsibly with the proper precautions. Saunas can even be custom-designed to suit the needs of the home.
